What is the Multilayer Chip Varistor?
-
A varistor is a ceramic electronic component whose resistance varies depending on the applied voltage.
The term "varistor" is derived from "variable resistor." Varistors are also known as non-linear resistors or voltage-dependent resistors.
This voltage-dependent characteristic enables a varistor to rapidly decrease its resistance when an overvoltage is applied, diverting excess current and thereby protecting electronic equipment from lightning surges and electrostatic discharge (ESD).
In particular, chip varistors are primarily used for ESD protection.
