Application point of 6in1 sensor for two-wheeled vehicles

Application case in two-wheeled vehicles [6in1 sensor]

In the case of two-wheeled vehicles, inertial sensors are used for the IMU module and TFT display as described below.

  • Primarily used in sport type vehicles for instantly computing angular speed of Pitch (rotation around the left-right axis), Roll (rotation around the front-rear axis), Yaw (rotation around the up-down axis) and acceleration information in front/back, left/right, up/down directions enables instant computation of accurate posture and motion of the two-wheeled vehicle.
  • Detecting accurate posture and motion of a two-wheeled vehicle to apply traction control, riding mode, race ABS, semi-active suspension system, and adaptive lighting for supporting safe and comfortable cruising.
  • During cornering of a curve, sensor data is used to avoid tipping over of the driver by controlling engine output and wheel rotation avoiding skid and slip-down.
  • V2X for a two-wheel vehicle is also used for vehicle motion and position detection.

Application point of 6in1 sensor for two-wheeled vehicles

  • Contribution to IMU module cost reduction and achievement of IMU module compact-sizing and inclusion into TFT display
  • Self-diagnostic function is built into all 6 axes for providing functional safety by the sensor itself
  • Stable sensor data acquisition by high anti-vibration performance against vibration-affect in two-wheeled vehicles

Adoption effects of 6in1 sensor on two-wheeled vehicles

Effect (1) Contribution to IMU module cost reduction and compact-sizing and loading the sensor into TFT display while saving space

IMU module for two-wheeled vehicles was previously made by loading multiple units of 3-4 axis type inertial sensors for enabling 6-axis detection. In contrast, the 6in1 sensor can achieve the required functions by loading only 1 module into an IMU module. In addition, when compared with other companies' 6-axis sensor products, it is 3.3 times smaller in size (*surveyed by the company). Our 6in1 sensor can be mounted not only in IMU modules but also included in the TFT display of two-wheeled vehicles, enabling data acquisition for front motion detection as well as light leveling and adaptive lighting, etc.

【Point】

  • Contribution to our customer's cost reduction by reducing the number of sensors in an IMU module
  • Contribution to compact-sizing of the IMU module by using the compact-sized 6-axis sensor
  • 6-axis space-saving sensor enables installation on the rear surface of a compact TFT display

Effect (2) Double achievement of 6-axis detection and functional safety

In a two-wheeled vehicle, the IMU module provides an important role in judging cruise, turning, and stopping. A single judgment error may lead to a life-threatening serious accident. For this reason, functional safety is required for the inertial sensor loaded in the IMU. In this context, the 6in1 sensor is equipped with a self-diagnosis function in all 6 axes (3-axis acceleration and 3-axis angular speed), and the sensor itself conforms to ASIL-B(D).

Effect (3) Excellent vibration immunity and heat resistance

Two-wheeled vehicles are more easily affected by engine vibration and road noises (while driving on unpaved or gravel roads) compared with 4-wheeled vehicles. Accurate vehicle attitude needs to be detected even in an environment with large vibration noise, and vibration resistance is required by the sensor itself. In such conditions, the 6in1 sensor has cleared the Variable Frequency Vibration (VFV) test specified by the reliability standard AEC-Q100 for vehicle-use electronic components possessing sufficient anti-vibration strength.
In addition, the temperature warranty range of the sensor is set wider from -40°C to 125°C, enabling operation near the high-temperature engine room. The very little restriction applied to its mounting position is one of the factors contributing to a customer's system.
