Panasonic Electronic Devices Co., Ltd. (PED; President: Toshiaki Kobayashi) has decided to transfer its multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) business to Murata Manufacturing Company, Ltd. (President: Tsuneo Murata).
Panasonic's MLCC employs its proprietary ceramic materials, utilizing their superiority in sheet casting to realize a compact, high-capacity capacitor. Currently, manufacture of the MLCC is undertaken by the Ceramics Division of the Panasonic Electronic Devices Japan Co., Ltd. (based in Hokkaido, Japan), PED's fully-owned subsidiary. The business has been expanded principally in the field of information communications, including mobile phones and laptop computers.
However, from now on, PED wishes to deploy its business resources in the ecology and energy fields, where high growth is expected, and has decided to transfer the MLCC business operations to Murata Manufacturing Company. This will involve the transfer of the company's technology and know-how, developed over a long period, to Murata. This transfer will ensure that the handover of the trading relationships established with our customers and other factors will be handled smoothly. Both companies will work closely to ensure the completion of this business transfer by January of 2010.
PED is fully maximizing its strengths in materials and element technology and black box technology to accelerate growth in the capacitor business, in particular, making a rapid shift to the up-and-coming ecology and energy fields. This involves a concentration of business resources invested in the film capacitor, the industry-leading specialty polymer aluminum electrolytic capacitor, and high-capacity electric double layer capacitor, which is demonstrating a solid performance in the in-vehicle market. Our objective is to be a strategic partner able to supply customers with high value through the introduction of new products that have the capacity to open up new markets.
